I've had a few of you call about issues with Email after you've changed to vista. Well is sterling microsoft fashion its an issue with them. Common errors are 0x80042112 and 0x800cccof
I found a fix for it though on google groups.
:
1. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program w cmd
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotatioin marks
5. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
6. If nothing changes, reenable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

More on this issue we had a customer write in with issues with outlook 2007. We had him follow the instructions to turn off Syn and his outlook still didn't work. To try to move the discussion along i had him set his mail up in outlook express, and of course it ran fine there. However in doing this his outlook 2007 now works fine.
So if you are experiencing this issue you may want to setup outlook express and try that and then see if you have the same issue. |

I received this Email from one of our customers and wanted to share it with you. I"ll keep this updated with info as i receive it but think that it impacts many.
I spent two hours today with Microsoft Level 2 Support. We could regularly recreate the Outlook 2007 Receive problem that I documented. Making them look at a totally clean installation of Windows XP and Office Professional 2007 with no firewalls, no routers, no virus protection seemed to take away most of their excuses. We were able to recreate the problem on my ACTWD domain POP3 servers, my SBCGLOBAL POP3 servers, ... and their Microsoft POP3 servers (2 different ones). They were then able to recreate it on their computers using their POP3 servers.
Results:
Microsoft acknowledges that there is probably a problem with POP3 Receive on Outlook 2007 (they say that it might be that the servers do not support some new function ... but, since their servers have the same problems, they think it is probably Outlook 2007).
This problem has NOT been reported before. The problems that they have had reported are performance or upgrade related.
It has been escalated for research and debug ...
---------------------------------------------------------
A related issue is that in most cases, due to the error, Outlook 2007 leaves Email on the server even if it set to remove them. |

Latest on my Outlook 2007 problem
13-March-2007
Outlook 2007 support research (I presume a higher level of support) called
and did additional testing via my computer.
During this testing we easily duplicated the error when using POP3 servers
hosted by ACTWD, YAHOO, and another Microsoft test account.
We were unable to duplicate the error on another Microsoft test server, MSN,
and one other ISP's server, BUT even though there was no error message
generated, the first message in the POP3 server mail box DID NOT DOWNLOAD.
So, the problem was occurring, but not generating an error message.
Microsoft has now seen one other report of an error while attempting to
retrieve POP3 server messages and many reports of performance problems.
Microsoft is attempting to duplicate the error in their lab and will contact
me to let me know how their troubleshooting is progressing.
I strongly suspect that some of the reported "performance" issues may
actually be the POP3 error problem. |

Some of the problems caused by outlook 2007 have been identified.
Though my converstaions with Art we have found that there is an incomplete auth string which allows you to authorize a mailbox when you hit send and receive. If the Auth code is wrong the server it so continue and disregard. Which is what our servers are doing.
However, this bad code mimics a DOS attack. I was often getting the question of why the problem seemed to be hit and miss based on who the ISP was. In the end the problem is those who are more secure had the problem because their systems were stopping the software and this bad code from coming into the network. Less secure providers don't have the problem because they dont' have the protection to stop it in the first place.
We feel that Microsoft will not correct this because they dont' consider this to be their problem. Their recommendation is for users not scan for the type of simlulated attack this Auth code reacts to. In my opinion i find that to be pretty lame. They have forced network admins to poke holes in their security so that their software typo won't be rectricted from firewalls.
It is a bad business. But i suppose in the end what are we all to do. They are microsoft and everyone seems to make allowance for them instead of them working peacefully to keep their corporate users safe and encourage mailserver safety. This foobar, typo in the code makes many alot less safe. |
